Pelicans’ First-Round Pick Derik Queen Undergoes Surgery for Torn Wrist Ligaments; Recovery to Be Assessed in October

Derrick Queen, the New Orleans Pelicans’ first-round pick, recently underwent surgery to repair a torn scapula ligament in his left wrist. The team announced on Friday that Queen, who was selected 13th overall from Maryland in last month’s NBA Draft, will be reexamined in 12 weeks. He sustained the injury during a game against the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this week. This 12-week recovery period coincides with the start of training camp and preseason games.

The Pelicans had moved up 10 spots from pick No. 23 to draft Queen, sacrificing an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to acquire him, along with selecting Oklahoma guard Jeremiah with their No. 7 pick. During the Las Vegas Summer League, Queen played three games, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over 27.1 minutes per game. Known in college as an offensive powerhouse, the Pelicans allowed him more ball-handling opportunities in the Summer League, which helped him gain valuable experience.

Queen scored 7 points in his debut and followed up with 8 points against the Trail Blazers, putting up his best performance with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists against Portland in Las Vegas.

Fan Take: Derrick Queen’s injury is a setback, but his potential as a dynamic offensive player makes him one to watch closely. His recovery status will be crucial for Pelicans fans, as his impact could significantly shape the team’s future and the overall competitiveness of the league.
