Scotty Schaeffler was a tournament favorite before entering the 2025 Open Championship, but it was a big story as Rory McIlroy had been heartbroken in the past since 2019, trying to capture a jug of clarets in her home country in Northern Ireland. After two days of play, Schaeffler issued quite a statement The world’s No. 1 fired his second round of 64 on Friday, jumping alone at 10 under, moving the conversation to his highest ever registration.
Schaeffler will play alongside Matt Fitzpatrick in the final pairing Saturday. They tee off at 10:35am ET.
As we enter the Royal Portrush travel date, the rest of the field knows that it needs something special to knock Schaeffler out of the top spot on the leaderboard. In the penultimate group, 2023 Open Champions Brian Herman and Hao Tonlee will feature the tee-off at 10:25am.
Many of the top stars are on the weekend, but the biggest threat to Schaeffler entering this week is more than seven shots from the pace. At least one of them will need to try to match Scheffler’s 64 on Saturday.
McIlroy leads that group at 3 under He begins to pursue Ludwig Åberg and Justin Rose, who will play alongside Jordan Smith at 9:30am, will return at 2am and tee off together at 9am.
Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood are under the age of one AM, so they form one of the marquee groups in the morning and try to find a good mojo at 8:05 AM. Jordan Spieth and Victor Hofland (7am) and John Lahm and Shane Raleigh (6:30am) are back evenly, hoping for mild, early conditions on Saturday.
