NBA Fans React to Marcus Smart Contract Move as Lukadon Sic Signs Two-Year Deal with LA Lakers

Marcus Smart, the former Defensive Player of the Year, has agreed to a buyout deal with the Washington Wizards and is set to join the LA Lakers. After spending only half a season with the Wizards alongside Khris Middleton and CJ McCollum, Smart was considered a trade candidate this offseason. Reports indicate that the Lakers, led by Luka Doncic, are the likely new home for Smart, who Doncic personally recruited.

Smart earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2022 and reached the NBA Finals with the Boston Celtics the same year. He was later traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team deal that brought Christaps Porzingis to the Celtics. Now 31 years old, Smart remains a valuable scorer and one of the top defenders, bringing veteran experience to a Lakers team led by Doncic and LeBron James.

Fans have had mixed reactions to the news, with some praising the fit for the Lakers’ defense, while others are skeptical, doubting the move will significantly impact the team’s success. Since leaving the Celtics, where he was a key player including during their 2024 Championship run, Smart’s career has been hampered by injuries, limiting him to 54 games over the past three seasons. If he stays healthy, Smart could be a key defensive presence for LA, especially after the departure of Dorian Finney-Smith, strengthening a Lakers roster that aims to blend defense with offensive stars Doncic and James.

Fan Take: This signing is significant because it adds a seasoned defensive stalwart to a star-studded Lakers lineup, potentially transforming their defensive reliability. For basketball fans, Smart’s move underscores the ongoing strategic shifts in NBA team-building, where defense and veteran leadership remain crucial amidst star-driven offenses.
