Shaquille O’Neal Questions Marcus Smart’s Defensive Skills on a Key NBA Star, Magic Johnson Stands Firm in Support

The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing to sign Marcus Smart, a former Defensive Player of the Year. His move from the Washington Wizards will become official once he clears the exemption.

According to ESPN, Smart has agreed to a two-year contract worth $11 million, despite interest from the New York Knicks. Luka Doncic played a crucial role in convincing Smart to join the Lakers, recognizing the value and impact the 31-year-old veteran can bring to the team.

Drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2014, Smart has built a reputation as one of the NBA’s fiercest competitors, known for his aggressive playing style. A notable figure in Lakers history, Shaquille O’Neal, now a TNT analyst, once criticized Smart’s defensive skills, particularly his ability to guard Jimmy Butler during the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals. O’Neal argued that Smart couldn’t shut Butler down effectively, challenging his Defensive Player of the Year credentials.

Despite this criticism, Smart played a pivotal role in helping the Celtics reach the NBA Finals by winning a tough 4-3 series. Magic Johnson, another Lakers legend, praised Smart for his performance, highlighting his 24 points, 12 assists, nine rebounds, and strong defense against Butler during that playoff run.

After Boston’s loss in the 2022 Finals to the Golden State Warriors, Smart was traded in 2023. Following brief stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards, he is now set to showcase his talents with the Lakers once again. Smart is already drawing attention and demonstrating his ability to handle the pressures that come with playing in the spotlight.

Interestingly, Magic Johnson may become more involved with the Lakers organization in a business advisory capacity to the new ownership group. Byron Scott has hinted at possible changes in the Lakers’ front office, potentially increasing Johnson’s influence, and Johnson has spoken positively about Smart.

Fan Take: Marcus Smart’s arrival brings a much-needed defensive toughness and leadership to the Lakers, potentially altering the team’s dynamics and playoff prospects. For basketball fans, this move highlights the importance of veteran grit and versatility in building championship-contending teams in today’s NBA.
