The Eastern Conference is wide open for the upcoming NBA season. Both the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers are dealing with major injuries, as Jason Tatum and Tyrese Halliburton suffered Achilles tears during the playoffs, shaking up the conference landscape. This situation offers other teams a genuine shot at reaching the NBA Finals.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks are currently favored to emerge from the East, with the Knicks holding one of the best odds to get to the Finals (+260 according to FanDuel). However, several other teams might also contend. The Orlando Magic enhanced their shooting this summer by adding Desmond Bain, and the Philadelphia 76ers, often overlooked recently, remain a team to watch despite a season hampered by injuries.

When healthy, Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey form the strongest trio in the East. After falling into the lottery, the 76ers secured the third draft pick and added VJ Edgecombe to their lineup. Edgecombe expressed excitement about joining a top organization and aims for All-Rookie honors and an NBA championship.

While these are ambitious goals, they seem attainable if the Sixers can stay healthy. They currently have +3600 odds to win the NBA Finals from the East. A fully fit Embiid would significantly boost Philadelphia’s chances, especially as signs suggest he won’t repeat last season’s struggles. However, injury concerns persist; George had knee surgery after offseason training and will be reevaluated before training camp, which is concerning.

Last year, George, Embiid, and Maxey played only 15 games together. For the Sixers to meet Edgecombe’s Finals ambitions, these key players must stay on the court consistently. Otherwise, it could be another disappointing year for a team that has struggled to meet expectations during the Embiid era.

Fan Take: This evolving Eastern Conference is thrilling for basketball fans, as it promises a more competitive and unpredictable playoff race. The health and performance of star players like Embiid and George could redefine the balance of power and potentially lead to a new era of NBA excitement.
