The Kansas City Chiefs have officially announced a four-year contract extension with defensive player George Karlaftis, as reported by various media outlets. ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that the deal is worth $93 million, including $62 million guaranteed.

In his three seasons with the Chiefs, Karlaftis has accumulated 24.5 sacks, 115 total tackles, 56 quarterback hits, and 24 tackles for loss. The defensive standout was the Chiefs’ first-round pick in 2022, selected 30th overall from Purdue.

During the Chiefs’ run to Super Bowl LIX, Karlaftis recorded four sacks, 13 tackles, eight QB hits, and four tackles for loss, joining key defensive players like Chris Jones, Nick Bolton, and Trent McDuffie under coach Steve Spagnuolo’s system.

At 24 years old, Karlaftis had one year remaining on his rookie contract, with the Chiefs previously exercising his fifth-year option for the 2026-27 season. According to Spotrac, his $62 million guaranteed ranks ninth among NFL edge rushers, and his average annual salary of $23.25 million places him among the top 10 highest-paid players at his position.

Last season, the Chiefs ranked 18th in the NFL with 39 sacks, and their defense allowed 3,970 yards, finishing the regular season with a 15-2 record. They advanced to Super Bowl LIX but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles with a score of 40-22.

Karlaftis joins guard Trey Smith as one of the Chiefs players recently awarded significant contract extensions. Smith signed a four-year, $92 million deal with $70 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player at his position. The Chiefs are also expected to pursue an extension for McDuffie.

Kansas City will kick off training camp at Western State University in Missouri on Monday.

Fan Take: This contract extension signals the Chiefs’ commitment to strengthening their defense, a crucial move for maintaining their competitiveness in the NFL. For fans, it’s exciting to see young talent like Karlaftis being rewarded, which could set the tone for an even more formidable Chiefs defense in the coming seasons.
