Keiler Navas, the Costa Rican goalkeeper, has reportedly signed with Newell’s old rival, the Liga MX club Pumas, according to an announcement made by the Argentine team on Monday.

Pumas will pay a fee of $2 million to acquire Navas from Newell’s.

The three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid has inked a one-year deal, and he may debut this Friday in a league game against Queretaro.

Navas is also anticipated to participate in the League Cup matches next week, where coach Efrian Juarez will lead his team against Atlanta United, Orlando City, and Inter Miami CF during the group stage.

At 38 years old, Navas’s tenure at Newell’s lasted only six months. He is regarded as one of Concacaf’s most accomplished players, showcasing Costa Rica’s strong performance in the recent Gold Cup.

“Keiler Navas is no longer with us and will now pursue his career at Pumas in Mexico,” stated Newell’s. “This decision aligns with our belief in prioritizing the team’s interests. Our commitment to professionalism and respect for the club’s values is non-negotiable. We believe it is crucial for every member of the club to work in harmony and prioritize the collective goal over individual aspirations.”

“Our direction is clear: unity, effort, and belonging. We continue to strive each day to honor our colors and resonate with our fans’ emotions.”

In addition to his Champions League trophies, Navas has also claimed La Liga, Club World Cup, and Super Cup titles during his time at Madrid, along with three league titles at Paris Saint-Germain.

Navas joined Newell’s as a free agent in January and made 16 appearances.

Pumas was in search of a replacement for goalkeeper Alex Padilla, who returned to his previous club earlier this month.

Navas reportedly had ties to Liga MX and was eager to join Pumas to be closer to his home country of Costa Rica.

Fan Take: This transfer is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it demonstrates the ongoing movement of elite talent among leagues, especially in North America. Navas’s experience could greatly enhance the competitive landscape in Liga MX, drawing more attention to the league and further raising the profile of soccer in the region.
