Ryder Cup Europe announced on Tuesday the location will host a biennial event in 2031. After a 34 year drought, the Ryder Cup will return to Spain for the 48th edition of the competition with the stadium course with the Camiral welcome golfers who welcome golfers to Costa Brava.
“Today’s announcement not only recognizes Camiral as one of Europe’s leading venues, but also acknowledges the substantial contributions that Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup,” said Guy Kinnings, CEO of the European Tour Group. “Since Spain last hosted in 1997, the Ryder Cup has grown significantly. It is one of the world’s leading sporting events, bringing great economic benefits and global exposure to the host region and country.
At the final Ryder Cup in Spain, the captain of Valesteros won the European team at Valderrama in 1997. England welcomed the event 15 times, Scotland hosted twice, and France, Ireland and Italy visited once since the event began in 1927.
Spain enjoys the history of the Balesteros-leading Ryder Cup-adored and partnership with Jose Maria Orazabal. The compatriots together scored 12 points as players, both of which served as the winning captains. Olazabal was at the helm when Europe overcomes a 10-6 Sunday single deficit during 2012’s “Miracle in Medina.”
Other Spaniards, such as Jon Rahm and Rafa Cabrera Bello, have been involved in recent years, and are playing in the UK, the second longest with 11 men from the country playing in the Ryder Cup.
