Sebastian Fundora Triumphs Over Tim Tszyu in Thrilling Super Welterweight Rematch

Sebastian Fundora successfully defended his WBC Super Welterweight title after Tim Tszyu failed to continue in the eighth round of their rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night in Las Vegas. This fight marked a sequel to their intense 2024 encounter, where Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) claimed victory by split decision after Keith Thurman withdrew from the event due to injury during training. The earlier bout left Tszyu (25-3, 18 KOs) visibly cut from a sharp elbow strike by Fundora.

Determined to exact revenge, Tszyu entered the ring with high hopes, but Fundora was intent on proving his prior win wasn’t a fluke. Fundora acknowledged the pre-fight predictions from his father, who confidently anticipated a victory. Early on, Fundora utilized his 6-foot-5 height and range to land a powerful left hand that sent Tszyu to the canvas and forced him into a defensive stance for much of the fight.

Despite Tszyu’s resilience, he struggled to evade Fundora’s precise left hand strikes. Reflecting on the early knockdowns, Fundora noted that his mindset has evolved since their last fight, especially after a loss to Brian Mendoza, reinforcing his determination this time around. Tszyu mounted a comeback with overhand rights and heated exchanges in the seventh round, but Fundora finished strong by cornering and unleashing a fierce combination, including a triple uppercut.

Tszyu’s team ultimately decided not to send him out for the eighth round. Tszyu admitted defeat, recognizing Fundora as the best 154-pound fighter currently in the sport.

Fan Take: This showdown underlines Sebastian Fundora’s dominance in the super welterweight division and highlights the fierce rivalries that keep fans on the edge of their seats. For fighting enthusiasts, it’s a reminder of the sport’s unpredictability and how determination and skill continually reshape boxing’s landscape.
