MotoGP’s Unluckiest Rider Deserves to Ride with Top Honda Team

MotoGP riders, especially the unfortunate ones, seem unable to catch a break. Joan Mir experienced a crash in the Czech Grand Prix caused by an incident involving Alex Marquez. Mir has been involved in conflicts with several riders including Fermin Aldeguer (Assen), Jack Miller (Aragon), and Ai Ogura (Sachsenring), often blaming his rivals for these incidents. Honda’s factory rider has recorded eight DNFs out of 12 Grand Prix races this season.

Mir, plagued by bad luck, had to cut his trip short and return home from the Czech Republic on Sunday night. On the Crash MotoGP podcast, Peter McLaren remarked on Mir’s predicament, saying, "It’s like he’s waiting for someone to collide with him." McLaren explained Mir’s particular misfortune, noting that in high-speed situations, Mir’s strong braking often leads him to release the brakes as others attempt to pass, resulting in crashes. Despite showing promising speed, Mir’s championship standings lag far behind rivals like Johann Zarco, who sits 8th with 109 points compared to Miller’s 19th place with 32 points. Both Mir and Zarco have each fallen 15 times this season.

The latest crash involving Mir was attributed to Alex Marquez, who received a long lap penalty for the next Grand Prix. On the podcast, Lewis Duncan described this penalty as fair. Marquez claimed he wasn’t trying to overtake but was simply checking if it was possible before moving inward. Duncan criticized the move as reckless, especially given Ducati’s speed advantage over Honda, calling it clumsy and unnecessary. Marquez had a challenging weekend and did not qualify well since Pecco Bagnaia claimed pole position. Duncan noted Marquez’s recurring entanglements, including a previous incident in Austin involving Jorge Martin.

For Marquez to become a legitimate championship contender next year, Duncan believes he needs to elevate his performance and avoid such risky clashes. Consistency is key, as the championship gap could be narrower if issues like crashes were minimized. Duncan concluded that the single long lap penalty was a reasonable consequence for Marquez’s actions.

Fan Take: This news highlights the intense pressure and fine margins in MotoGP where even top riders can be sidelined by unfortunate incidents or risky decisions. For racing fans, it underscores the unpredictability of the sport and the importance of consistency and discipline for championship success, promising an intriguing battle ahead.
