UFC 321 Showdown: Tom Aspinall to Defend Maiden Title Against Ciryl Gane in Abu Dhabi

Tom Aspinall has his first official UFC title defense lined up. UFC President Dana White revealed on Tuesday that Aspinall will face two-time title contender Ciryl Gane in the main event at UFC 321. Aspinall earned the interim UFC heavyweight championship in September 2023 after knocking out Sergei Pavlovich. Meanwhile, Jon Jones had to wait due to a delayed fight with former champion Stipe Miocic caused by injuries. While Jones waited, Aspinall successfully defended his interim title with a quick 60-second knockout of Curtis Blaydes.

Jones had shown eagerness to face Aspinall but put those plans on hold when Aspinall retired and Jones was elevated to undisputed champion. However, Jones’ retirement was short-lived as he rejoined the drug testing program with intentions to compete in the July 2026 UFC White House event. With Jones out of the immediate picture and Aspinall holding the true championship, Ciryl Gane emerged as the top challenger for the belt.

Gane is a former interim heavyweight champ, having won that title in August 2021 after defeating Derrick Lewis but fell short challenging Francis Ngannou for the undisputed crown. He also had a brief title fight opportunity against Jones but lost quickly after Jones parted ways with the UFC. Gane remained on the rise with victories over Sergei Spivac via TKO in September 2023 and a split decision win against Alexander Volkov in December 2024.

UFC 321 is scheduled for October 25th at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Fan Take: This matchup marks a significant moment in heavyweight MMA, promising a thrilling clash between two of the division’s elite fighters. For fans, it’s an exciting chance to witness the next chapter in the evolving heavyweight landscape, potentially setting the stage for new rivalries and legendary bouts.
