Zurich, Switzerland – Aitana Bonmati, following Spain’s victory in the semifinal against Germany, mentioned that she anticipated German goalkeeper Anne Catlin Berger would leave a gap at the near post after she scored to kick off the European Championship final against the UK on Sunday.

Bonmati netted the decisive goal in the 113th minute on Wednesday, marking Spain’s first triumph over Germany and their inaugural entry into the Euro final in history.

The midfielder received a pass from Athenia del Castillo inside the box, turned, and shot near Berger, prompting Spanish fans to erupt at Stadion Rezzigrund.

“We analyzed the goalkeeping technique and knew that she would sometimes leave space at the near post,” Bonmati shared at a press conference after being named the match’s MVP.

“I had one look and didn’t dwell on it; I wanted to avoid a penalty shootout, so I took the shot as hard as I could.

“Once I struck the ball, I took off running without even thinking about where to go. I saw the entire bench standing and cheering me on.

“This goal is a collective achievement for our entire team. We all contributed and fought hard together.”

The end of the tournament was particularly tough for Berger, who delivered an outstanding performance against France in the quarterfinals and made eight saves against Spain, the reigning World Champions.

However, she acknowledged her role in the late defeat. “I take responsibility,” she admitted to reporters. “I should have covered the near post, so I feel particularly disappointed in myself.

“I can make numerous saves, but that goal was my duty. I feel incredibly sorry because everyone fought hard for the team.”

Spain will head to Basel to face England, the reigning champions, in the upcoming 2023 World Cup final, where they previously secured a 1-0 win in Australia.

With their historic defeat of Germany and reaching the Euro final, Montseme’s team has a chance to make even more history.

“Once again, we have made history,” Bonmati expressed. “We broke another record by reaching the Euro final for the first time and finally overcoming Germany.

“I am immensely proud to be part of this generation of athletes, and I anticipate being even more thankful for everything we achieve moving forward.

“We are going to celebrate tonight; we deserve it, but we must keep our focus on England, as the next match is just around the corner.”

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans, highlighting Spain’s emergence as a dominant force in women’s football. As the sport continues to grow globally, Spain’s performance sets a new benchmark and inspires future generations of players.
