Wrexham is enhancing its squad as it prepares for its inaugural championship season, announcing the acquisition of midfielder Lewis O’Brien from Premier League side Nottingham Forest on Thursday.

The 26-year-old secured a transfer for an undisclosed fee and has committed to a three-year contract.

O’Brien joined Forest in 2022 but had limited opportunities in the Premier League, making 13 appearances while on loan at DC United, LAFC, Middlesbrough, and Swansea City in MLS.

“I’m absolutely buzzing. It’s taken a while, but being here feels fantastic,” O’Brien stated.

“The last few years have been a whirlwind for me and my family, but signing a long-term deal and finding a home here is a wonderful feeling. After discussing with everyone, I realized this club has significant ambitions. I want to be part of that journey and help them reach their goals.”

O’Brien has a total of 162 appearances in the championship and celebrated his third consecutive promotion last season, bringing crucial experience to Wrexham’s squad as they compete in the second tier of UK football for the first time in 42 years.

“We’re thrilled to have Lewis join the club,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson. “He brings a wealth of experience at this level and will be a fantastic asset to our team. I’m excited to work with him.”

With the backing of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham has also recently signed New Zealand international defender Ribert Kakaath and attacking midfielder Josh Windus after Sheffield’s exit from Wednesday.

Fan Take: This signing marks another significant step in Wrexham’s ambitious journey, showcasing their commitment to strengthening the team in a competitive environment. For soccer fans, it symbolizes the increasing influence and investment in lower-league football, promising a more exciting and competitive landscape for the sport.
