Inter Miami has officially signed Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul from Atletico Madrid, the club announced on Friday.

According to Miami’s statement, the team currently has three designated player slots taken by Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, meaning De Paul was not initially slated as a designated player. However, should a DP spot open up at the end of his loan, Inter Miami may pursue a significant deal for him.

“What draws me to Inter Miami is the competitive spirit and the ambition to win titles and make history for the club,” De Paul said.

“It’s a club that is shaping up to be remarkable and to build a long-lasting legacy so many fans can support.”

With just a year remaining on his contract in Madrid, both parties managed to negotiate a deal, with De Paul being the latest star to join Miami.

His signing enhances the club’s depth and quality, aligning with Inter Miami’s broader vision.

“We’re thrilled to have a player of Rodrigo’s caliber. He is a winner on a global stage, and his aspirations align with ours at Inter Miami as we strive for these objectives together,” the club stated.

“Some of the world’s top players have already chosen Inter Miami as their destination. Rodrigo is now part of our journey to reshape the sport in this country and make our supporters proud.”

De Paul joins Argentine Captain Messi, with hopes to extend his contract past December 2025.

Together, De Paul and Messi were instrumental in Argentina’s victories at the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America.

“Rodrigo is a player I’ve admired for years. He brings leadership and has contributed greatly to every team he’s been a part of, especially the national team. His experience, passion, and skill elevate both our team and city,” said club officials.

De Paul transferred to Madrid in July 2021 for €35 million ($41 million) from Udinese, tallying 187 appearances, netting 14 goals and providing 26 assists during his tenure.

Last season, he was a pivotal figure under Diego Simeone, featuring in 53 matches across all competitions, including three games at the Club World Cup last month.

“Rodrigo de Paul is leaving Atletico Madrid to pursue his career at Inter Miami,” the Atletico statement read. “We wish him the best of luck in his personal and professional endeavors.”

Atletico has already strengthened its midfield this summer, adding US midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis, Alex Baena from Villarreal, and Argentine Thiago Almada from Botafogo.

Lizzy Becherano and Adriana Garcia of ESPN contributed to this report.

Fan Take: This signing could significantly enhance the trajectory of Inter Miami and the overall quality of soccer in the MLS. With De Paul joining forces with Messi, fans can expect a more competitive league that attracts global attention and raises the bar for player performance and team success.
