In their second preseason match of the summer, Liverpool faced a defeat against AC Milan. This game saw the debut of Florian Wiltz, their new £100 million ($134.3 million) signing, who started in place of Louis Diaz and Darwin Nuñez, potentially marking a turning point for their futures at the club.

The match ended with a 4-2 scoreline, highlighting Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities throughout the game.

Milan quickly took the lead at Kaitak Sports Park when Portugal’s international, Rafael Leon, broke through from the left after just ten minutes, stealing the ball from Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk and slotting it home from a difficult angle.

Liverpool equalized 15 minutes later, with a surprising strike from Dominique Szoboszlai. The 16-year-old Rio Nuguna found Fikayo Tomori one-on-one, and after some nimble footwork, he curled the ball to Szoboszlai for the finish.

The teams went into halftime on level terms, but then Arne Slot made a tactical adjustment—only Lian Grain Burch remained on the field for the second half.

With new signing Frimpong joining the ranks, the second half saw Cody Gakpo and Ben Doak taking the lead for Liverpool, but they were caught off guard again. Leon found space and set up his former Chelsea teammate, Reuben Loftus-Cheek, who scored with a header past substitute goalkeeper Mamardashvili.

Just before the time mark, Liverpool faltered again, conceding a third goal. Alexis Saelemaekers created space on the left before delivering a cross to Noah Okafor, whose shot left Mamardashvili stranded.

Gakpo managed to pull one back for Liverpool, connecting with a cross from Ibrahima Konate. However, chaos ensued in the dying moments, allowing Milan to restore their two-goal advantage as Mamardashvili ventured too far forward, and Erra capitalized by tapping it into an empty net.

Fans honored the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota with a planned round of applause in the 20th minute. The tribute included a wreath-laying ceremony led by Kenny Dalglish, commemorating the player who tragically passed away in a car accident on July 3rd.

Wirtz’s impactful 45 minutes alongside Frimpong and Ngumoha showcased promising signs for Liverpool moving forward.

Fan Take: This match signals critical developments for Liverpool as they navigate preseason preparations. For soccer fans, such shifts in team dynamics and player performances could significantly influence the upcoming season, shaping the narrative surrounding Liverpool’s ambitions in the league and beyond.
