Jets QB Justin Fields to Join 7-on-7 Drill in Camp Following Toe Injury Recovery

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields participated in a 7-on-7 drill during training camp on Saturday, just two days after being helped off the field with a dislocated toe. During the drill, Fields completed passes, including a well-placed deep throw to wide receiver Tyler Johnson that excited the fans in attendance.

While Fields did not join team drills and is still being closely monitored daily, Jets coach Aaron Glenn emphasized they are taking a cautious approach with him. The team has a break from practice on Sunday. Glenn praised Fields’ performance in the 7-on-7 drills and said the team will continue following the recovery protocols to ensure he’s ready to play.

Fields’ injury on Thursday caused concern, but after medical evaluation, it was confirmed not to be serious. On Friday, Fields watched practice from the sidelines but showed significant improvement on Saturday. Glenn believes Fields, who is expected to start in his first season with the Jets, will not fall behind because of the injury, highlighting that Fields only missed one day and remains involved in team meetings.

In Fields’ absence from team drills, backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is leading the offense. The practice also featured tackling drills, an area where coach Glenn brought in a modified routine from his previous coaching experience to help improve the team’s ability to make open-field tackles, which was a problem last season. The loudest cheer of the day came when cornerback Sauce Gardner successfully tackled wide receiver Garrett Wilson out of bounds.

Glenn stressed the importance of making tackles in open space, noting it is critical in today’s wide-open NFL environment.

Fan Take: This update on Justin Fields is crucial for Jets fans and the NFL community as it shows the team’s commitment to player safety while ensuring their star quarterback stays on track. Fields’ recovery and readiness could significantly impact the Jets’ performance this season, making it a storyline worth following for anyone invested in the sport.
