At Saratoga, N.Y., the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereign made a remarkable comeback after falling behind to clinch victory in a $500,000 race on Saturday. Jockey Junior Alvarado guided Sovereign through nine furlongs in 1:49.52, earning a $3 payout as the 1-2 favorite against four competitors, marking one of the smallest fields of Sovereign’s career.

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott announced that Sovereign is set to compete in the $1.25 million Travers Stakes in upstate New York on August 23. The race had tense moments around the turn when Sovereign appeared to lose ground as Baeza, Closer Sandman, and Hill Road surged ahead, but Alvarado remained confident in his horse’s ability to make a strong finish.

“Everyone else was moving, and I thought, ‘It’s time to push forward,’” said Alvarado. “I was completely sure because I knew what my horse was capable of.”

Baeza, who also placed third in both the Derby and Belmont, finished second, with Hill Road trailing in third by 9 1/4 lengths. Mo Plex took fourth place, followed by Sandman in fifth.

Fan Take: This thrilling victory by Sovereign underscores the resilience and competitive spirit that make horse racing so captivating. With the Travers Stakes on the horizon, fans have even more reason to be excited about this rising star and the thrilling races yet to come in the season.
