Breanna Stewart Dodges Major Leg Injury, Set to Join Freedom on Upcoming Road Trips

New York appears to have some relief following concerns about Liberty All-Star Breanna Stewart’s injury. Stewart left early during Saturday’s loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, but imaging results released Sunday, as reported by Madeline Kenney of the New York Post, showed she avoided any serious low-leg injury.

Although the exact nature of Stewart’s injury is unclear, this is certainly positive news for New York as they aim to defend their title as WNBA champions. The report states that Stewart will accompany her team on their upcoming four-game road trip, including a preview matchup against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx, who are strong contenders for the WNBA Finals. Stewart’s availability for the Wednesday game is uncertain, but head coach Sandy Blondello expressed hope that she will recover fully with time.

Whether she returns to the court soon or later on the road trip, Stewart is expected to be back for the crucial final stretch of the season ending September 11. Stewart left Saturday’s game early after suffering a non-contact injury and did not return, with no immediate update provided by the coaching staff post-game. Despite the Liberty’s close 101-99 loss to the Sparks, they remain in first place in the Eastern Conference with a solid record, although trailing behind the Lynx for the best WNBA record.

A seven-time All-WNBA team member and two-time MVP, Stewart is vital for New York as they look to maintain their dominance in the East and secure another championship run.

Fan Take: The news of Stewart’s manageable injury is a huge relief for WNBA fans, as her presence is crucial to the league’s top competition and excitement. Her return will not only boost the Liberty’s title defense but also elevate the visibility and competitiveness of women’s basketball overall.
