The Buffalo Sabres have been absent from the Stanley Cup playoffs for the last 14 seasons. Although they aim to return to playoff contention next year, achieving this will require strong performances against every opponent. Recently, THN.com reviewed games against their seven Atlantic Division rivals, but now it’s time to examine their matchups with Metropolitan Division teams, starting alphabetically with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Carolina Hurricanes

New Hurricanes Players: Nikolaj Ehlers (LW), K’Andre Miller (D), Mike Riley (D)
2024-25 Season Series: Sabres 2-1-0, Hurricanes 1-2-0
Upcoming 2025-26 Games: November 8 in Carolina, November 23 in Buffalo, January 19 in Carolina

The Sabres managed a series win over the Hurricanes last season but still missed the playoffs. This year, the Hurricanes have adjusted their roster, retaining key defenders like Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov and adding winger Nikolaj Ehlers. Carolina’s GM Eric Talsky also brought in defenseman K’Andre Miller from the New York Rangers and signed free agent depth defender Mike Reilly.

The Hurricanes are expected to be one of the top contenders in the Metropolitan Division and are considered a strong Cup contender for the upcoming season. However, they still seem a work-in-progress, with roughly $106.6 million in salary cap space available, giving Talsky flexibility to strengthen the team further as needs arise.

Buffalo can be cautiously optimistic about facing Carolina next season. The Sabres have evolved over the past year and made improvements that give them a better chance against the Hurricanes. Despite most matchups being away games, Buffalo will need to compete strongly to replicate or surpass last year’s success against Carolina.

Key Challenges and Needs for the Sabres

Buffalo has roughly $5.19 million in salary cap space to work with and could potentially use that to improve their roster, whether by adding immediate reinforcements or young talent for the future. To keep pace with the Hurricanes, the Sabres must enhance their speed, skill, and physicality both offensively—by challenging veteran goalies Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov—and defensively, by countering star forwards like Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Ehlers, and Seth Jarvis.

Playoff Outlook

Pressure is mounting on the Sabres to end their 15-year playoff drought, but the Atlantic Division, considered the toughest in the league, offers fierce competition for every point. The Hurricanes set a high bar for the Sabres to surpass within their division. If both teams succeed, they are likely to meet again in the playoffs, where Buffalo could potentially pull off a surprising Cinderella run — provided everything aligns perfectly.

Fan Take:
This matchup highlights how the Sabres are gradually reshaping their team to become a genuine playoff contender, symbolizing hope for a franchise hungry to return to glory. Hockey fans should watch closely, as a Sabres vs. Hurricanes playoff series could deliver thrilling drama and signal a more competitive era in the league.
