On Monday, a shooting occurred in a midtown Manhattan office building, resulting in at least five fatalities, including a police officer near New York City, according to sources who spoke with The Associated Press. The suspect was identified as Shane Tamra from Nevada, who reportedly took his own life. Law enforcement confirmed Tamra’s identity through his body identification and a concealed carry permit from Las Vegas. The New York Fire Department responded to the incident at around 6:30 PM at a Park Avenue office building, which houses major financial firms and the National Football League.

Witness Jessica Chen shared with ABC News that she heard multiple gunshots while attending a presentation on an upper floor and that she and others barricaded themselves in a meeting room for safety. Mayor Eric Adams confirmed several injuries and was seen updating the public via social media while police conducted thorough floor-by-floor searches. Local news footage showed people evacuating the building with their hands raised. The building is partly occupied by Blackstone and the Irish consulate general.

Financial workers nearby witnessed the chaotic response after hearing the shots, describing the scene as a “crowd panic.” The heavily trafficked Midtown location, near St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Grand Central Terminal, experienced traffic delays, road closures, and public transport disruptions due to the emergency. Notably, New York City had been on track to have its lowest murder rate and gun violence levels in decades until this tragic event.

Fan Take: This incident is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of violence, even in places connected to major sports organizations like the NFL. For NFL fans, it underscores the importance of community safety and security measures around venues and offices linked to the sport, highlighting a need for ongoing vigilance to protect players, staff, and fans alike.
