  • Aston Villa is targeting Romano Schmidt’s movement
  • Villa faces competition with Premier League clubs

Aston Villa’s summer transfer plans continue to evolve, suggesting that the club is now focusing on Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmidt.

According to the Guardian, the 24-year-old Austrian midfielder has emerged as a potential target for Unai Emery, who is eager to strengthen his team ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Villa’s return to European competition prompted an ambitious change in transfer priorities, this time through the Europa League, following a strong finish in the Premier League, which was sixth place.

Emery understands the challenges that come with juggling domestic and European commitments, particularly with the physical and tactical strength he demands from his midfielder.

Schmidt may not be the biggest name to circulate in the Rumors factory this summer, but he was able to prove a cleverly calculated addition.

Schmidt has quietly built a reputation in the Bundesliga as one of the more technically reliable midfielders.

His versatility is comfortable as No. 8 and No. 10, and even wider when needed, and fits Emery’s worth.

Emery actively made changes to the villa team during her time at Villa Park. The Spanish manager is well supported by the club owners and will be the same story this summer.

The Austrian midfielder was able to move away from Welderbremen this summer for a fee in the 15 million euro (£13 million) region.

His consistent performance has attracted attention not only from Villa but also Premier League rivals West Ham United and Fulham, both of whom are closely monitoring his situation.

Schmidt has emerged as a key transfer target as all three clubs are seeking midfield reinforcements ahead of their long campaign.

The tracking is still in its early stages, but the villa is firmly maintained in the mix. It will depend heavily on whether the Midlands club decides to speed up consultations and meet Bremen’s assessment before rival clubs move.

As things stand, there is no formal negotiations, but the foundations are laid out and the villa’s interest is genuine.

If the transaction is realized, Schmid can provide a balance and work rate type that perfectly complements Villa’s existing midfield.
