Tragic Incident at Tower Housing League: NFL Employee Critically Wounded in Deadly Shooting

On Monday, a shooting at a midtown Manhattan building that houses both NFL offices and major financial firms resulted in serious injuries to NFL employees, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell in a memo to staff. Four individuals, including a police officer near New York City, were killed, and another person sustained serious injuries during the incident at 345 Park Ave.

Goodell confirmed that one NFL employee was critically hurt and is now hospitalized in stable condition. The league is providing support to the employee’s family while assuring that all other staff members are safe and the building has been nearly cleared. He also mentioned increased security measures in the coming days and allowed New York-based employees to work remotely or take a day off on Tuesday.

The gunman was identified as Shane Tamra from Las Vegas, who took his own life. Police Commissioner Jessica Tish stated that Tamra had a documented history of mental health issues, though his motives remain unclear. Authorities are investigating why he chose this particular location.

Tamra left a three-page note claiming he suffered from CTE and requested that his brain be studied after death. The note vaguely referenced the NFL, according to police sources. CTE, a degenerative brain condition linked to repeated head trauma, can only be confirmed post-mortem.

The New York City Fire Department responded to reports of the shooting around 6:30 pm. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported that NFL staff members were evacuated; the league’s offices occupy the 5th to 8th floors of a 44-story building. Four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing the scene.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that investigations into the event are ongoing.

Fan Take: This tragic event underscores the reality of violence potentially impacting the NFL community beyond the field. It highlights the importance of mental health awareness and security measures, which could influence how the league supports its players and employees moving forward.
