Ex-Blackhawks Remain Unsigned and Open for Free Agency Deals

Most of this year’s NHL Unlimited Free Agents (UFAs) have already found new teams as free agency time winds down, which is typical for this period of summer when activity usually slows. However, one notable exception is former Chicago Blackhawks forward Craig Smith, who remains unsigned.

Last year, Smith quickly secured a one-year, million-dollar contract with the Blackhawks on the first day of free agency, but this year the experienced winger is taking more time to find his next deal. Despite being unsigned so far, there is still a good chance Smith will get picked up due to his strong two-way play and veteran presence, which could be valuable for a team looking to bolster their forward depth. It wouldn’t be surprising if he signs a one-year contract or accepts a professional tryout (PTO) offer before training camp begins.

Smith has a solid record against the Blackhawks, with nine goals, seven assists, and a total of 16 points over 40 games, along with a minus-2 rating. His stint with Chicago ended at the 2025 trade deadline, when he and goalie Petr Mrazek were traded to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Joe Veleno.

Looking ahead, the Blackhawks will have several players entering the final year of their contracts during the 2025-26 season. Whether this offseason or during the season, it’s likely some players will be re-signed or extended as the team plans for expansion.

Fan Take: Craig Smith’s pending signing is a storyline worth watching because his veteran leadership and reliable two-way game can make a meaningful impact on a team looking to strengthen its lineup. For hockey fans, his situation highlights the competitive dynamics of free agency and how experienced players can still find opportunities to contribute in the NHL.
