A Bright Spot: ASG Suspension Offers Messi an Essential Respite

InterMiami CF’s coach, Javier Mascherano, is optimistic about entering the 2025 League Cup with renewed motivation, especially after Lionel Messi received a one-game suspension for not participating in the MLS All-Star Game. The team will kick off their League Cup journey against Liga MX’s Team Atlas at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday night.

Mascherano expressed his hope that Messi is eager to perform, stating, "We didn’t anticipate the suspension following the Cincinnati game, but it works to our advantage." He added that after a series of games, Messi needed a break, which he believes will benefit him as they face a demanding schedule leading into the League Cup.

The coach also confirmed that both Messi and Jordi Alba should be ready for Wednesday’s match, jokingly noting, “If they don’t suspend them, Jordi and Messi will be available.” Additionally, new signing Rodrigo de Paul, who played alongside Messi on the World Cup-winning Argentina squad, has yet to train with the team while waiting for his visa. Mascherano mentioned, “Once we receive his paperwork, he’ll join the roster. He’s a versatile player who connects well with our star, Leo, which is a significant advantage for us.”

While de Paul has been training individually, Mascherano noted that they are hopeful he could be included for the upcoming Club World Cup match against Atletico Madrid. "Rodrigo is in good shape," Mascherano added. “As soon as his work permit is sorted, we’ll bring him along.”

Last year, InterMiami was eliminated by the Columbus Crew in the 16th round after winning their first League Cup title under former coach Geraldo Martino in 2023.
