Bayern Munich has officially announced the acquisition of Colombian international Luis Diaz from Liverpool.

According to sources, the transfer fee is reported to be €75 million (approximately $88 million), including potential add-ons. Diaz becomes Bayern’s third signing this summer, following the arrivals of Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen and Tom Bishro from Hoffenheim.

“I’m overjoyed. Joining FC Bayern means a lot to me. They’re among the top clubs globally,” Diaz stated.

“I aim to contribute with my playing style and character. My goal is to win every title, which drives me to work hard every day with the team.”

Diaz missed a friendly match against AC Milan with Liverpool last Saturday, which fueled speculation about his exit, and he received permission to leave the Asia preseason tour the following Sunday.

Sources previously indicated to ESPN that Diaz expressed a desire to leave Liverpool over the summer of 2024. Liverpool had held onto him despite existing contracts extending until 2027, as they evaluated both the team and market conditions.

Negotiations fell through twice due to disagreements over contract extensions, largely due to the gap between Liverpool’s asking price and the offers made.

Liverpool had been keen on bolstering their squad throughout the summer, rejecting advances from both Barcelona and Bayern, asserting that their players were not on the market.

Earlier this month, the club turned down a €67.5 million offer from Bayern, but ultimately consented to Diaz’s transfer after Bayern submitted a more competitive bid.

Last season was Diaz’s most productive with Liverpool, as he scored 17 goals across all competitions, playing a pivotal role in the team winning the Premier League title.

He joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022, with a total potential fee reaching €49 million, and tallied 41 goals in 148 matches.

His departure is expected to assist Liverpool in balancing their expenditure this summer, having already invested approximately £290 million on players such as Florian Wiltz, Jeremy Fripon, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Hugo Ekichike.

This transfer contributes to the £190 million generated from player sales under sports director Richard Hughes, who commenced his role last summer.

Liverpool is also reportedly preparing to formalize their interest in Alexander Isak, the Newcastle United striker.

The 25-year-old was removed from Newcastle’s Asia preseason tour following a thigh injury, but insiders suggest Isak is open to opportunities away from St. James’ Park.

Fan Take: This transfer signifies a new chapter for both Bayern Munich and Liverpool as they adjust their rosters. For soccer fans, it highlights the shifting dynamics of player power and market influences, shaping the future landscape of the sport.
