The Indiana Fever are currently enjoying a two-game winning streak after overcoming elite opponents like Las Vegas and the Chicago Sky. However, they face a significant challenge on Wednesday against the Phoenix Mercury, especially without their All-Star guard Kate Linklark. Linklark was ruled out for the game against the Mercury, marking her fifth consecutive missed game due to a right groin injury sustained in their July 15th victory over the Connecticut Sun. There is no set timeline for her return.

Linklark’s injury troubles have plagued her this season, forcing her to miss 13 out of 26 games during what could have been a breakout sophomore year. Despite her absence, the Fever sit at 14-12 and hold the sixth spot in the playoff standings, managing a 6-7 record without their star. This latest injury keeps Linklark out of the lineup for the 14th time this season, with previous absences related to quad and groin issues. She also missed the Fever’s Commissioner’s Cup win over Minnesota, the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game, and the 3-point contest in Indianapolis.

The injury occurred late in the Boston game on July 15th when Linklark hurt her right groin after completing a key assist. She immediately left the game, unable to continue. This setback came just before Indiana hosted the 2025 WNBA All-Star Weekend, where Linklark was voted team captain and selected for the 3-point contest, both of which she had to forgo to rest.

Regarding her comeback, Fever head coach Stephanie White highlighted the WNBA’s demanding schedule as a factor complicating recovery timelines. She noted the league-wide challenges with player health due to the grueling calendar and extensive travel, especially compared to the NBA. The Fever are about to embark on a four-game road trip, facing Dallas, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Phoenix in quick succession.

Statistically, Linklark has been impressive in her limited time on court, averaging 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, and a career-high 8.8 assists per game—the second-highest assist average in the league behind Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas.

Fan Take: Kate Linklark’s injury highlights the physical toll WNBA players endure and underscores the need for better scheduling to protect these elite athletes. Her absence not only impacts the Fever’s playoff push but also reminds fans how crucial star players are to maintaining competitive balance and excitement in the league.
