Former Panthers Defensive Star Returns from Retirement to Play for Finland

Former Florida Panthers defenseman Marcus Nutivaara is ending his retirement to join the Finnish team Kärpät based in Riga. Nutivaara, 31, last played professionally for the Panthers in the 2021-22 season, where he recorded one assist. Although he signed with the San Jose Sharks in the following year, he did not appear in any games and remained on contract for two more seasons before deciding to return to hockey with Kärpät, a club known for competing at various levels.

Nutivaara has a history with Kärpät, having played for them at the Under-16, Under-18, and Under-20 levels before moving up to the professional team and winning a championship. A native Finn, he was drafted 189th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2015 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2016-17 season, tallying two goals and seven points across 66 games. In 2018, he signed a four-year deal worth $10.8 million with the Blue Jackets but was traded to the Panthers within two years. During the 2020-21 season, Nutivaara played 30 games for Florida, contributing 10 assists, but only played one NHL game in the final year of his contract before signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Sharks, where he did not play any NHL or AHL games.

Now back with Kärpät, Nutivaara will join a roster that includes several NHL prospects and former NHL players.

Additionally, Nico Miccola, a crucial player during the Panthers’ playoff run, has drawn attention from the NHL, though his significance to the team might be underrated.

Fan Take: This comeback by Nutivaara highlights how professional players often find new life and opportunities overseas, showcasing the global nature of hockey. It also underscores the importance of development teams like Kärpät in nurturing talent that contributes both domestically and internationally.
