US Men’s National Team midfielder Johnny Cardoso expressed his eagerness to “grow and learn” under manager Diego Simeone after being officially introduced as an Atlético Madrid player on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Atlético confirmed the signing of the 23-year-old Cardoso from Real Betis, sealing a five-year contract.

This arrival indeed marks a significant step for Cardoso.

“It’s a dream to come here and share this experience with my family,” Cardoso stated during a press event at the Metropolitano Stadium. “Atlético is a massive club that matches my ambitions,” he added.

“It’s an honor to work with all the staff, especially Simeone, who plays in my position. I’m excited to learn from him and evolve,” Cardoso remarked.

Born in New Jersey to Brazilian parents, Cardoso also possesses an Italian passport, allowing him to play without taking up a non-EU spot in Simeone’s squad.

He will don the No. 5 jersey at Atlético, which was previously worn by Rodrigo de Paul before his transfer to Inter Miami.

“I have a lot of faith in the project’s vision because of what the club has shared with me,” he remarked. “We share the aspiration to grow and secure titles.”

“The team features a blend of young talent and experienced players. Competing across multiple tournaments gives me confidence in our ability to challenge for all of them,” he added.

Atlético finished third in La Liga and aims to enhance their performance for the 2024-25 season after a semifinal exit in the Copa del Rey.

This summer, they faced an early exit from the Club World Cup, suffering a 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in their opener.

Cardoso is optimistic about competing against powerhouses like Real Madrid and Barcelona, stating, “We all hold the same potential. Atleti is a formidable team… Simeone has demonstrated excellence from the outset. I’ve gained so much and anticipate a remarkable season ahead.”

Cardoso made his US senior debut in 2020 against Wales, accumulating 22 caps and winning the CONCACAF Nations League titles in both 2023 and 2024.

He had to withdraw from Mauricio Pochettino’s CONCACAF Nations League squad in March due to a muscle injury.

Fan Take: This signing is a significant moment for both Cardoso and Atlético Madrid, as it highlights the club’s commitment to integrating young talents with immense potential. Soccer fans should keep an eye on Cardoso’s development under Simeone, as it could reshape the landscape of both La Liga and the USMNT.
