Knicks Secure Mikal Bridges with a Massive Four-Year, $150 Million Contract Extension

Mikal Bridges’ future with the Knicks is now secured after the team agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract extension with the veteran guard. Although Bridges was eligible for a four-year deal worth $156 million, he accepted $6 million less than the maximum to give the Knicks valuable financial flexibility, which is crucial in today’s competitive NBA environment.

Financial flexibility was a key factor behind the deal, according to insiders. A league source told SNY, "He wants to be here and win here." Bridges, traded to the Knicks from the Nets last summer, averaged 17.6 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.2 rebounds over 82 regular-season games in 2024-25. The 28-year-old stepped up in the playoffs, averaging 15.6 points and helping the Knicks reach the Eastern Conference Finals, despite some inconsistencies during the regular season.

Both Bridges and the Knicks align well with the timelines of other key young players like Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mitchell Robinson, all of whom are under 30 years old and under contract through the 2026-27 season. The extension, first reported by ESPN, begins next season. Had Bridges waited to become an unrestricted free agent, he could have commanded an even longer and more lucrative deal.

Last summer, Brunson agreed to a discounted extension to avoid hefty luxury tax penalties, similar to Bridges, though Bridges’ discount is less significant. Every dollar saved is vital for teams like the Knicks, who want to stay competitive. Staying under the NBA’s second luxury tax apron gives the Knicks more flexibility to sign free agents and make trades, which they wouldn’t have if they exceeded the $222 million apron threshold starting in 2026-27.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the Knicks currently have roughly $18 million in space under the second apron heading into summer 2027. Last season, the Knicks gave up five first-round picks to acquire Bridges, so they had to either extend him or trade him. Now, with the extension in place, Bridges cannot be traded for six months.

Fan Take: This deal is crucial for Knicks fans as it solidifies a cornerstone player committed to the team’s future while maintaining financial flexibility to build a competitive roster. Bridges’ commitment signals the Knicks’ serious intentions to contend in the Eastern Conference and could inspire other stars to join the team, elevating the overall landscape of professional basketball.
