US Goalkeeper Matt Turner Makes MLS Comeback After Loan from Lyon

Matt Turner is making his return to Major League Soccer (MLS) as he competes for the starting goalkeeper position on the US national team. He has joined the New England Revolution on loan from the French Ligue 1 club Lyon, with the deal announced on Friday extending until June 2026. This agreement includes an option for the Revolution to purchase Turner’s contract, turning him into a designated player for the remainder of the 2025 season, with potential eligibility for target allocation money in 2026.

Turner’s move comes after he struggled to get consistent playing time at Lyon, where he served as the US’s starting goalkeeper during the Concacaf Gold Cup matches in June and July. At 31 years old, he was the go-to US goalkeeper prior to the 2022 World Cup, starting 14 consecutive matches before the Gold Cup and being involved in 23 out of 24 games.

He is eager to reclaim his previous form in New England, where he began his professional career in 2016. His last appearance for the Revolution was in 2022, where he achieved a save percentage of 53.3% across five starts.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans, as Turner brings experience and talent back to MLS, enhancing the league’s profile. His performance in New England could shape the future of US soccer and spark greater interest in domestic matches, especially as fans rally behind a familiar face.
