Luka Doncic Extension Secured: Lakers Face New Quest to Uncover the Perfect Secondary Star for Luka

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially secured Luka Doncic with a three-year contract extension valued at $165 million, including a player option in the third year, according to ESPN. This move sets the stage for the Lakers to strategize their next steps.

With Doncic now signed, the Lakers are focusing on finding a second star who can eventually step into the role as LeBron James, now 40, phases out. While the team has Austin Reeves, who might become a free agent in 2026 and has a contract lower than his performance suggests, Reeves’ playmaking style may not perfectly complement Doncic’s game. Therefore, the Lakers are looking to add either a versatile wing or a high-caliber big man to pair with their star Slovenian player.

DeAndre Ayton, acquired after the Portland Trail Blazers trade, may get a real chance to prove himself as a key center moving forward, but his long-term fit with the team remains uncertain, so it’s too soon to guarantee his place in the lineup for years to come.

The Lakers must act swiftly and decisively because if they want to get the most out of Doncic’s prime years, they need to start competing for championships this season.

Looking ahead, Doncic did not immediately lock into a full max extension, meaning he could become a free agent if he opts out early. By 2028, he’ll be eligible for a contract worth up to 35% of the salary cap, which could total $417 million over five years, assuming cap growth remains steady.

Though Doncic’s options remain open, his competitive nature and recent NBA Finals experience suggest he’s focused on winning now. Having the choice to leave in 2028 provides a safety net if the Lakers fail to build a strong supporting cast around him.

Ultimately, Doncic is banking on the Lakers to assemble the right pieces, a hopeful but somewhat optimistic outlook given the current roster. At 26, he’s giving the organization a chance to prove that optimism right.

The responsibility now falls on the Lakers to live up to these expectations.

Fan Take: This extension is a game-changer for Lakers fans and NBA watchers alike, signaling a commitment to building a powerhouse around one of the league’s brightest stars. If the Lakers can successfully surround Doncic with the right talent, it could redefine the future of the franchise and spark a thrilling new era in basketball.
