Jerry Jones on Mika Parsons’ Trade Request: “No Need to Lose Sleep Over It”

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has confirmed that the team will not trade defensive star Micah Parsons, despite the player’s recent demand for a trade amid stalled contract extension talks. Speaking on August 2, a day after Parsons took to social media to request a trade, Jones emphasized that such contract negotiation stand-offs are common in the NFL, citing past examples including negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, as well as a holdout by running back Emmitt Smith in 1993.

Jones explained that the process of guaranteeing a contract worth nearly $200 million is a delicate matter. Parsons remains at training camp but has yet to practice due to a back injury and has avoided speaking to the media. Entering the final year of his five-year rookie deal, Parsons is seeking a new contract that would likely make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history, though he could be franchised in 2026 if no deal is reached.

Parsons, the Cowboys’ first-round draft pick in 2021, has accumulated impressive career stats including at least 12 sacks and 52.5 tackles each season over four years. The key disagreement seems to revolve around whether or not formal negotiations took place during spring talks; Jones insists an agreement was close, while Parsons claims that the team refused to engage his agent, David Murgetta, in the process.

When asked if any terms from the spring discussions remain valid, Jones said Parsons effectively removed them from consideration. Jones expressed hope that Parsons will work within the negotiation framework established earlier this year and stressed that both parties must be fully committed to any future agreements.

Several Cowboys players and fans have publicly shown support for Parsons, with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb urging the team to “Just Pay the Man,” and fans chanting “Let’s pay Micah!” during practice. When questioned about whether Parsons will be ready for the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4, Jones gave a non-committal response, acknowledging the ups and downs in any working relationship but assuring fans there is no cause for alarm.

Fan Take: This contract saga highlights the high stakes and tension involved in locking up superstar talent in the NFL. For fans, how this situation resolves could set the tone for future player negotiations and impact the Cowboys’ pursuit of championship success.
