In Uncasville, Connecticut, Sabrina Ionescu led the New York Liberty to an 87-78 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, scoring 36 points. Emma Meesman made a notable return to the WNBA by contributing 11 points, helping the Liberty end their four-game losing streak. Johnkel Jones also played a significant role, adding 21 points and nine rebounds despite missing All-Star participation, while Brenna Stewart was sidelined due to a knee injury.

On the Connecticut Sun side, Tina Charles scored 17 points with eight rebounds, and Annie Murrow added 16 points and nine rebounds. The Sun, who suffered their worst loss of the season just two days prior, also received contributions from Bria Hartley with 12 points and Marina Maburi with 10.

Meesseman, the former Finals MVP and current Euroleague Women’s MVP for the last three seasons, made a strong impact in the second half. Ionescu achieved her first double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds, marking her fifth 30-point game, and surpassing the milestone of 1,000 assists faster than almost anyone in history. Early in the game, Ionescu scored 16 points of New York’s first 20, leading them to a 25-19 first-quarter lead and a 45-38 advantage at halftime. Meesseman’s efforts in the third quarter helped New York extend their lead to double digits, finishing the quarter ahead 54-43, and the Liberty maintained control in the fourth quarter with a 66-57 lead.

Fan Take: This victory highlights Sabrina Ionescu’s growth into a dominant force in the WNBA and signals a resurgence for the New York Liberty. For fans and the sport, it underscores the rising talent and competitiveness in the league, promising exciting seasons ahead.
