Buffalo Sabres vs. Pittsburgh Penguins: Will the Sabres Reign Supreme in Next Season’s Metropolitan Showdown?

The Buffalo Sabres have their 2025-26 schedule set and must capitalize on their rivalries to end a 14-year Stanley Cup playoff drought, including their matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins, part of the Sabres’ Metropolitan division rivals in the Eastern Conference, face challenges maintaining competitiveness with aging stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Letang, and Eric Carlson.

Though experts doubt the Penguins will be real playoff contenders in the upcoming season, the Sabres will still need to overcome them in head-to-head games. The Penguins made notable roster changes this summer, adding new players such as Anthony Flight, Justin Brazeau, Matt Dumba, Connor Clifton, Parker Wotherspoon, and Alexander Alexeiff. However, their defense and offense depth don’t inspire confidence, and Pittsburgh hasn’t won a playoff round in seven years.

Buffalo’s goaltending depth outshines Pittsburgh’s, with the Penguins relying on young Arthur Shirov, who faces a tough defense, or Tristan Jarry, who struggled last season and may return to the AHL. The Sabres boast more depth beyond top players Crosby and Malkin, featuring better third and fourth-line forwards and defensemen.

New coach Dan Muse faces a big task leading the Penguins, given the team’s mix of aging stars and lackluster supporting cast, while the Sabres show greater urgency to improve. Buffalo should aim to win at least two of their three games against Pittsburgh next season as they push for a playoff berth.

Fan Take: This matchup is crucial for Sabres fans eager to break their playoff drought, highlighting the shifting dynamics in the Eastern Conference. How Buffalo handles teams like Pittsburgh could signal a turning point for the franchise and bring renewed excitement to the sport.
