Jeff Kassouf covers ESPN women’s soccer, focusing on USWNT and NWSL. In 2009, he founded Equalizer, a news outlet dedicated to women’s soccer, and has won Sports Emmy Awards at NBC Sports and the Olympics.

Trinity Rodman, forward for the Washington Spirit, made an emotional return to the field on Sunday after nearly four months away, leading her team to a 2-1 victory against Portland Thorns FC.

Participating in Washington’s first NWSL match since June, Rodman entered the match in the 76th minute, receiving enthusiastic cheers from the Audifield crowd.

With the score tied at 1-1, Rodman distinguished herself during the match by striking loose balls and finding the back of the net in stoppage time, getting past Thorns Keeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Emotional after scoring the winning goal, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist reflected on her difficult journey with injuries that had limited her playing time for both club and country over the past year.

“The Holy Cow, that was the hardest thing I’ve faced with injuries and everything,” Rodman expressed, holding back tears post-game. “Especially being back at home, with the crowd behind me and the team, to score that goal—it felt incredible. I wasn’t going to let that opportunity pass me by. I’m so happy to be back; I missed playing.”

Rodman’s last match before this one was on April 5, following her Olympic participation. However, she was sidelined again just a week later when she had to leave her NWSL game on April 12 for treatment in London. After a period of individual rehabilitation, she returned to team training in mid-July during the NWSL summer break.

Reflecting on her return, Rodman said, “I was just crying. This was a big moment for me. I went through a lot with my injuries and the uncertainties, but I’m back now for real, ready to work on what I need to regain my rhythm.”

Last week, Rodman told the press that while she will remain her fierce self on the field, she plans to be more cautious about her physical play in the future to avoid further injuries.

The Washington coach, Adrian Gonzalez, indicated before the match that he would approach Rodman’s return with caution, especially as she continues to heal and contribute to the team’s efforts this season.

Rodman has become one of the standout players in the NWSL and the USWNT. With her contract nearing its end, she previously told ESPN that she was uncertain about her plans, including potential moves to Europe.

Fan Take: Rodman’s return is significant not only for the Washington Spirit but for women’s soccer as a whole. Her resilience in overcoming injuries and making a comeback symbolizes the ongoing fight and passion that many players exhibit, inspiring fans and young athletes alike.
