Cleveland Browns Secure Tyler Huntley as Their Fifth Quarterback, Sources Confirm

The Cleveland Browns have added quarterback Tyler Huntley to their roster, according to sources who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday. This move aims to bolster the team’s quarterback depth as several potential starters are dealing with injuries.

Currently, the Browns are hosting a quarterback competition among Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Chedure Sanders. However, with the exception of Flacco, most have been sidelined due to various injuries. Pickett has not fully practiced since suffering a hamstring injury on July 26. Gabriel was limited in practice on Monday because of hamstring tightness. Sanders missed a team drill last Saturday due to arm pain but returned to full participation on Monday.

The Browns are preparing for joint practices with the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte team this Wednesday, ahead of their preseason opener on Friday. Head coach Kevin Stefanski mentioned on Monday that they are still finalizing plans for these joint sessions, similar to what they have done before.

Huntley, who is 27, spent last year’s training camp with the Browns and made the initial 53-man roster among four quarterbacks. However, after a trade did not go through, he was released shortly after the roster cut deadline. He later signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he played in five games and started in three.

The Browns also have quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is currently recovering from a right Achilles tendon injury and is expected to miss most of the 2025 season.

Fan Take: This signing shows the Browns’ commitment to keeping a competitive quarterback roster despite injury setbacks, which is crucial for sustaining their offensive performance. For NFL fans, it highlights the unpredictable nature of the sport where depth and adaptability can heavily influence a team’s success throughout the season.
