With just three races left in the regular NASCAR Cup Series season, three spots remain open in the 16-driver playoff lineup. The upcoming race at Watkins Glen’s road course will challenge the drivers before the season continues at Richmond Short Track and the renowned Daytona Super Speedway.

William Byron secured his second win of the year with a Fuel Mirage victory at Iowa Speedway, making him the fifth driver with multiple wins this season. Out of the 16 playoff spots, 13 are held by race winners. Tyler Reddick, Alex Bowman, and Chris Buescher currently occupy the last three playoff positions, though competition for the final spot is intense.

Tyler Reddick leads with a 122-point advantage but still hopes to avoid any new winners at Watkins Glen unless it’s him. He holds a 59-point cushion, but new winners could threaten his position. Alex Bowman, 63 points ahead in the standings, feels more secure after Iowa, expanding the gap between himself and Chris Buescher, who was just 11 points behind entering the race. However, the fight is far from over, especially with potential new winners.

Chris Buescher had a poor showing at Iowa, making him vulnerable as Ryan Preece closes the gap to just 23 points behind him. Since Buescher is the defending winner at Watkins Glen, he’ll be aiming to maximize stage points to maintain his playoff spot if another win isn’t in the cards.

Several drivers are under pressure to perform at Watkins Glen, including Kyle Busch, who sits 73 points below the cutoff with little chance to make up ground in the remaining races. Watkins Glen’s road course offers a unique opportunity for these drivers to prove themselves.

AJ Allmendinger, a top road course racer with three wins including Watkins Glen, is expected to be a strong contender. Ty Gibbs impressed on road courses earlier this year, supported fully by Joe Gibbs Racing as he seeks to secure a playoff spot. Michael McDowell, a road course specialist and winner at the Indianapolis Road Course, could also make an impact. Daniel Suarez faces intense pressure, needing a win to secure his future as he plans to leave Trackhouse after the season. Carson Hocevar could be a wildcard, having finished third at Watkins Glen last year, though his recent road course form has been mixed.

Fan Take: This race is a crucial turning point for the NASCAR Cup Series, with several drivers fighting desperately for playoff survival. Watkins Glen’s challenging road course could shake up the playoff field, reigniting the competition and keeping the excitement alive for NASCAR fans as the season heats up.
