Jeff Carlisle covers ESPN FC’s MLS and the US national team.

Santiago Moreno, the forward for the Portland Timbers, was absent from tonight’s League Cup match against Club America in Austin, Texas. The club stated to ESPN that the situation remains “unclear” and that they are consulting with MLS regarding the next steps.

At 25 years old, Moreno is being considered for a transfer to Brazil’s Serie A team Fluminense. However, sources indicate that the Timbers believe the offer does not align with the player’s market value.

The Timbers will reassess their options if a better offer for Moreno comes in, according to sources.

With only 10 regular-season games remaining, the Timbers are currently looking to improve their fifth-place standing in the Western Conference.

In an effort to push for a transfer, Moreno opted to skip Wednesday’s match and reportedly returned to Colombia.

The Portland Timbers issued a statement saying, “Midfielder Santiago Moreno was unable to participate in tonight’s match against Club America. There is no deal in place for his transfer, and his absence is considered unacceptable. The club is in communication with Major League Soccer regarding this matter.”

GivemeSport first reported on Moreno’s absence.

According to a report from The Oregonian, Moreno sought a transfer in 2023, even missing training sessions. At a later press conference, he denied intentions to request a move and expressed regret to his teammates.

This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights the ongoing tensions and complexities of player transfers in Major League Soccer. Moreno’s situation could impact not just the Timbers’ season but also the overall dynamics of player movement within the league, reflecting the growing ambitions and challenges of MLS teams.
