NFL Players Allowed to Use Personal Stinky Salt Unless Supplied by Their Team

NFL players are now permitted to use “smelling salts” during games. On Wednesday, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) informed players that the league had banned team staff from prohibiting the use of smelling salts and other ammonia-based inhalants. The NFLPA clarified that while clubs cannot supply these substances, the policy does not stop players from using them independently. The league’s directive prevents team officials from providing ammonia capsules, inhalers, or salts in any form.

The NFLPA referenced a 2024 FDA statement indicating no evidence supports the safety or effectiveness of these products, which may also mask concussion symptoms. Smelling salts remain common on NFL sidelines, with many players, such as San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, believing they offer a quick boost of alertness and energy.

Fan Take: This development is crucial for NFL fans because it highlights ongoing concerns about player safety and the methods athletes use to stay sharp during games. Allowing personal use of smelling salts respects player autonomy while prompting conversations about health risks and concussion awareness in the sport.
