WNBA Games Rocked by Green Adult Toys, Cryptocurrency Group Takes the Blame

A cryptocurrency group known as Neon Green Sex Toys has taken responsibility for suspending WNBA games for over a week. The group behind the meme coin Green Dildo Coin (Dildo) told USA Today that since July 29th, they have orchestrated incidents involving green adult toys—referred to as “Plank”—being thrown onto the court during six different WNBA games.

The lighthearted meme coin was launched on July 28th as a response to what the group sees as a toxic atmosphere in the crypto community. According to USA Today, the group coordinated plans to enter WNBA arenas with green sex toys to disrupt the games, starting the day after the coin’s release. A spokesperson emphasized that the stunt was not meant to harm anyone or disrespect the sport.

“We didn’t do this because we dislike women’s sports or because of the current trending stories. Similar disruptions happen in other sports, like the NFL and hockey,” the spokesperson said. They added that viral pranks were necessary to protect their project from falling prey to influencer groups that could compromise its mission.

Reactions among WNBA players and coaches have varied, with some finding humor in the initial incident and others expressing disapproval. The disruptions began on July 29th at the Golden State Valkyries vs. Atlanta Dream game and have since occurred in five more games, including matchups featuring Chicago, Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty, and Phoenix Mercury.

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with these stunts: one related to the first incident and another 18-year-old arrested for throwing objects at a Phoenix Mercury game and causing disturbances among fans, including a child. The spokesperson clarified that these arrests involved people outside their group. Kaden Lopez, the 18-year-old, apologized for his actions and described them as a social media prank.

The group indicated plans to continue with pranks promoting the coin, but promises they will be less disruptive and more focused on hobbies. They also seem keen on expanding their antics beyond WNBA games to other high-profile events.

Fan Take: This series of pranks highlights both the growing pains and vulnerabilities of the WNBA as it attracts wider attention. For fans, it’s crucial that the league and venues safeguard the integrity of the game while embracing its rising popularity, ensuring that disruptions like this don’t overshadow the sport’s progress.
