Anthony Richardson Sr. Exits Preseason Early Due to Finger Injury Sustained in Hard-Hitting Collision

Anthony Richardson Sr. made his preseason debut as the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, but his time on the field was cut short. On his second series’ first play, he was blindsided by a blitz from Baltimore Ravens linebacker David Ojabo, who sacked him. Richardson slowly got up and left the game with what was later identified as a finger injury.

Daniel Jones stepped in during the third series, with Richardson watching from the sidelines. Richardson was originally slated to play more series, but the sack and injury forced a change in those plans. This setback is another hurdle for Richardson, who has struggled with injuries throughout his first two NFL seasons and faced doubts about his health heading into the preseason due to a shoulder issue. Despite these concerns, he was healthy at the start of training camp and earned his first preseason start as the Colts began evaluating their quarterback options. Coach Shane Steichen said Jones was expected to start the second preseason game, and no decision has been made yet about the opening day starter.

The Colts have been preparing for a genuine quarterback competition all offseason to see who can provide the team with the best chance to win, especially coming off Richardson’s disappointing second year. Coach Steichen, under pressure to make the playoffs after two seasons without success, needs to demonstrate progress, and Richardson’s health will be a key factor in that. Early injuries could further complicate things.

Richardson’s initial series showed mixed results: he completed a pass under pressure that required a diving catch, had a quick screen wiped out by a penalty, and threw a late pass that was broken up. His second series started with a handoff but ended with the significant sack by Ojabo, who Richardson appeared unaware was coming. His injury history — including shoulder problems, a concussion, and an oblique injury — has plagued his young career, and unfortunately, he faced another setback before the first quarter of this preseason game even ended.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for NFL fans because Richardson represents the Colts’ hope for a franchise quarterback, whose health and development could define the team’s future. How he recovers and competes this season will not only impact the Colts’ success but also highlight the rigorous physical toll on young QBs in a highly competitive league.
