With the European club season approaching, it’s a crucial year for US men’s national team players ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Who among them has the most to prove in Europe?

Here are five players to keep an eye on. If you disagree with the selections or rankings, feel free to create your own!

5. Sergiño Dest | Defender | PSV Eindhoven

Dest is back in action after his ACL injury, showing promising signs. As he integrates back into the game, questions arise on whether he can adapt defensively under USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino. Coaches seem to recognize his potential, but it all comes down to his willingness to engage defensively.

It’s challenging to leave him off the field, whether it’s a four or three-man defense. If Dest stays healthy, this could significantly reshape the team’s right flank and elevate overall optimism about the squad heading into the World Cup.

4. Tim Weah | Winger | Marseille

I previously had high hopes for Weah’s role on the right wing, but with the emergence of Diego Luna and Malik Tillman, plus Christian Pulisic’s flexibility, he must fight for his position ahead of 2026.

Weah can play multiple positions and remains solid on the right, where I believe he should ideally play. Following his tenure at Juventus, he seems confident in his decision to join Marseille, and I hope he finds consistent playtime.

3. Yunus Musah | Midfielder | AC Milan

Musah has a lot to prove after being sidelined from the Gold Cup, indicating that his relationship with Pochettino may not have been ideal.

When Musah first emerged, he made an instant impact alongside Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie, showcasing his speed and offensive capabilities. However, concerns about whether he has reached his full potential linger, especially given his limited playing time.

There might still be untapped talent in him—he could play a role in the team dynamics, even if he’s not a starter.

2. Folarin Balogun | Striker | Monaco

Balogun is a player to watch, particularly with over 300 days until the World Cup. He demonstrated great promise when he first came on the scene, but injuries have hampered his progress at Monaco. Meanwhile, Ricardo Pepi has stepped up, which could make Balogun’s position more competitive.

If he gets back into scoring form, Balogun is likely to reclaim his role as a national team striker.

1. Gio Reyna | Midfielder | Borussia Dortmund

Reyna has been a hot topic, and while opinions vary, there’s no denying his talent.

It’s uncertain if he’ll remain in the squad, but if he cannot find a way to turn around his situation, his chances may diminish. His recent links to a transfer highlight his uncertain future. However, if he stays at Dortmund and starts performing well, it will likely reignite discussions about his place in the USMNT.
