NBA Guard Malik Beasley Faces Eviction from Detroit High-Rise Over Unpaid Rent: Report

Malik Beasley’s future with the Detroit Pistons or any other NBA team remains uncertain amid a federal investigation into his alleged involvement in gambling and prop bets. Should he re-sign with the Pistons, he will need to find new housing in Detroit, as he was recently evicted from a high-rise apartment in the city, according to Robert Snell of the Detroit News. The eviction came after security guards faced a lawsuit over unpaid rent at the residence.

Beasley, 28, has been sued twice for failing to pay a total of $21,500 in rent for a high-rise apartment in the Stott building, owned by Bedrock Detroit, part of the business holdings of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. A default judgment was made against him in 36th District Court after he did not respond to a lawsuit claiming he owed $7,355.

The nine-year NBA veteran is currently a free agent but had reportedly agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract with the Pistons before news of the federal gambling investigation surfaced. His lawyer, Steve Haney, has emphasized that Beasley has not been charged with any crime.

In addition to the gambling probe, Beasley is being sued by Hazan Sports Management Group for breach of contract, with claims that he owes them $650,000 upon contract termination. Despite these legal troubles and investigations, Beasley insists he will play in the NBA next season, whether for the Pistons or another team. Recently, he shared training videos from Miami and posts about his travels and nightlife in Europe on social media.

On Wednesday, he posted on Snapchat, “We have to be ready to go back to the Pistons, or, like I said, other teams are interested too.” Meanwhile, the Pistons are making moves by signing free agent guard Charis LeVert and completing a sign-and-trade deal for Duncan Robinson.

Last season, Beasley averaged 16.3 points per game, shooting 42% on 366 three-point attempts. He was Detroit’s third-leading scorer and played all 82 games as the team returned to the playoffs after finishing with the worst record the previous year. His strong performance earned him second place in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Fan Take: This situation is a significant storyline because Malik Beasley’s legal troubles and the gambling investigation could impact his career and the competitive landscape of the Pistons. For basketball fans, it raises important questions about player conduct and the league’s response to off-court issues while highlighting the challenges teams face in building a stable, winning roster.
