Bengal’s preseason debut reveals clear areas for growth and enhancement

The Cincinnati Bengals, coming off a strong season, showed promising signs in their preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. Quarterback Joe Burrow looked nearly flawless, throwing multiple touchdown passes, while wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase demonstrated his All-Pro caliber skills, securing a significant contract extension.

Despite these highlights, the Bengals fell short with a 34-27 loss, revealing some vulnerabilities, especially on defense. Cincinnati’s starting defense struggled against the Eagles’ offense led by quarterback Tanner McKee, compounded by weaker defensive plays in the exhibition setting. The Bengals managed to keep penalties relatively low with eight for 68 yards, but still committed too many procedural mistakes.

Burrow, in his second career preseason appearance, led two scoring drives in the first quarter, completing nine of ten passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Although there was a minor misstep on a throw to Tee Higgins, the offense was largely efficient. Pro Bowl players helped offset some errors, like right guard Lucas Patrick whose penalty prevented a potential touchdown, though tight end Tanner Hudson eventually scored on the drive.

Several errors proved costly, including an offside penalty by cornerback DJ Ivey that set up a field goal for the Eagles, and a roughness penalty against defensive tackle McKinley Jackson that led to a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati’s losses last season were mostly by close margins, with the exception of a one-sided defeat to the reigning Super Bowl champions. Head coach Zach Taylor expressed disappointment in the team’s performance, emphasizing the need for cleaner, more cohesive team play.

The Bengals aim to break their two-year playoff drought and capitalize on Burrow’s continued development, who finished last year leading the NFL in passing yards and as a close MVP contender. The preseason serves as a strategic warm-up, although Cincinnati’s slow starts in regular seasons have been problematic, with only one win in the first two weeks since 2019. Burrow, noting his passing accuracy as “average” in this game, is optimistic about improving in the coming weeks.

Fan Take: This preseason glimpse shows that while the Bengals have the star power and talent needed for success, their persistent penalties and defensive lapses remain a concern. NFL fans should watch closely—if Cincinnati can tighten up these loose ends, they could be a major force in the upcoming season, potentially reshaping the playoff landscape.
