Liverpool Faces Setback: Misses Kickoff Against Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged that he is unlikely to have Alexander Isak available for the upcoming season opener against Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old Swedish international missed a recent 2-2 draw with Espanyol in the Cera Cup at St. James’ Park on Friday.

Howe revealed that negotiations are ongoing regarding Isak, who turned down a £110 million offer from Liverpool, but he does not anticipate any resolution before the start of the season.

The Magpies’ head coach expressed, “I want Alex to play today and train tomorrow. It’s important for us to have our players on board—let’s be clear about that.”

“However, I don’t foresee any changes before the match against Aston Villa based on our current situation.”

Since returning to Tyneside, Isak has trained separately from the main squad after missing the team’s preseason tour in Singapore and South Korea.

His desire to explore other options this summer, in light of Liverpool’s substantial bid—placing his valuation near £150 million—has led to a delicate standoff.

Isak’s predicament forces the club into a major decision: either sell the player for a substantial profit, given he was acquired for £63 million three seasons ago, or try to convince him to extend his contract, which has three years remaining.

When asked if the club could hold firm against a sale, Howe replied, “I don’t think that would be appropriate, so I’d prefer not to go into details. I believe I’ve said enough.”

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, refrained from commenting on the pursuit of the Swedish forward during a press conference earlier that day.

The recent choice of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko to sign with Manchester United instead of Newcastle is another setback for the club as they continue their search for new targets.

Despite signing players like Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale, who made key saves against Espanyol, the club’s failure to secure other potential recruits such as Sesko and others has intensified scrutiny on the team’s operations.

Howe recognized Isak’s situation, highlighting past stability issues while affirming confidence in the project, stating, “This is a challenging time with many differing opinions, but I can assure everyone connected to Newcastle that the owners are fully committed to the project and fight for the club every day.”

Fan Take: This news is crucial for soccer fans as it highlights the ongoing flux in player transfers, particularly with star players like Isak drawing attention from major clubs. How the situation unfolds could significantly impact Newcastle’s season and the broader competitive landscape of the Premier League.
