BHA Launches Probe as Race-Fixing Scandal Rocks the Horse Racing World

A jockey is currently under investigation for allegedly fixing a race. The unnamed riders involved are accused of deliberately preventing horses from performing to their full potential, which goes against the rules that require jockeys to push their horses to make a genuine and timely effort.

This probe was initiated by a UK horse racing authority. According to SolarJump, jockeys have been asked to surrender electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones as part of the inquiry. At least one other rider and a licensed trainer are also reportedly implicated.

A spokesperson for the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) stated, “BHA will not comment on the investigation or speculation surrounding the potential investigation.”

This controversy marks the first significant case of race manipulation since Danny Brock was banned for 15 years by an independent disciplinary panel appointed by the BHA. In January 2023, Brock was found guilty of deliberately holding back three horses between December 2018 and March 2019 to benefit a group of gamblers.

Other individuals disciplined in related incidents include Sean McBride, assistant trainer to Newmarket’s Philip “Charlie” McBride, who was initially banned for seven years, with the ban later reduced to five years on appeal. At the time, the BHA emphasized that such behavior would never be tolerated, highlighting the damage these actions cause to the sport’s trust and integrity.

The BHA expressed the importance of maintaining faith in the fairness of the sport for both supporters and participants and commended the hard work of those who uphold its integrity. Danny Brock has since stopped riding as a jockey and transitioned to training greyhounds.
