New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown has found a key ally to help lead his new team. The Knicks have officially signed Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Chris Gent, according to sources who spoke to SNY. Gent, 55, previously worked under Brown with the Cleveland Cavaliers and has extensive coaching experience with multiple NBA teams including the 76ers, Magic, Cavaliers, Kings, Hawks, Lakers, and Hornets from 2003 to 2025. He even served as the interim head coach for the Magic during the 2004-05 season.

Recently, Gent guided the Hornets to victory in the Las Vegas Summer League Championship in July. As a player, Gent has a notable history, having won an NBA title with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and played for the Knicks during the 1996-97 season.

Gent’s hiring follows the Knicks passing over candidates like Timberwolves’ Pablo Prison and Pacers’ Matt Weiner. Additionally, Brown brought in Clippers assistant Brendan O’Connor this offseason to serve as New York’s top defensive assistant.

Fan Take: Bringing in a seasoned coach like Chris Gent signals the Knicks’ serious commitment to building a competitive and well-led team. This move could elevate the coaching quality in the NBA and inspire other franchises to prioritize experienced leadership in shaping their rosters.
