Maple Leafs’ Nicolas Roy Shares the Story Behind Choosing No. 55 Jersey

Nicholas Roy has chosen to wear jersey number 55 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, a number he hasn’t previously worn in the NHL. This number was last worn by him during his junior hockey days with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in the QMJHL.

Roy appeared on Leafs Morning Take with hosts Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill, where he talked about the significance of jersey numbers. He recounted that as a 14-year-old junior player, he was the youngest and last to be picked, which is how he ended up with number 55 initially. Although he wasn’t fond of the number at first, he stuck with it through his junior career. When joining the Vegas Golden Knights, he opted for number 10 because 55 was taken, but upon moving to Toronto, he returned to 55.

Roy, who once wore 55 with Vegas, joined the Maple Leafs in 2016 during an event honoring team legends. The number 55 has some history in Toronto, having been worn by George Armstrong and, more recently, Jason Blake, who played from 2007 to 2010, and Marc Giordano, who wore it from 2022 to 2024. Since the 2019-20 season, the Vegas Golden Knights’ right winger Keegan Colles also sported number 55, coinciding with Roy’s arrival from the Carolina Hurricanes organization.

As Toronto prepares for the 2025-26 NHL season, they continue to seek strong players for their top six lineup. Nicholas Roy expressed admiration for former Maple Leafs great Mats Sundin and recalled finding out about his trade to Toronto while traveling with family and friends. Meanwhile, former Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner has been spotted skating in Las Vegas Golden Knights gear, marking a new chapter for him and the team.
