Spain Welcomes New Coach Montse: A Fresh Chapter Post Women’s Euro 2022

The Spanish women’s national soccer team is undergoing a coaching change just two weeks after reaching the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro final. Montse Tome, who previously led the team, will not be continuing in her role and will be succeeded by former player Sonia Bermudes, as announced by the Spanish Football Federation.

Additionally, Iran Iturelli, another former Spanish player, has been appointed as the team’s assistant coach. This decision follows Tome’s guidance of the team to the Euro 2025 final, where they faced Britain and were defeated in a penalty shootout on July 27.

The federation expressed gratitude towards Montse Tome for her commitment, professionalism, and efforts as a coach, particularly after she took over from Jorge Wilda post the team’s 2023 World Cup victory and helped secure Spain’s first Women’s Nations League title in 2024.

Tome made history as the first woman to coach the Spanish senior women’s team. She was elevated to the position amid controversy concerning former federation president Luis Rubiales, who was convicted of sexual assault related to an incident involving player Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup ceremony in Australia.

Following Rubiales’ conviction, the Spanish football landscape has seen calls for reform and support for women’s teams grow stronger. As a result, significant changes have been initiated to improve conditions for female athletes.

Sonia Bermudes, a former captain with experience at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, retired from playing in 2020 and has since worked with the Real Madrid youth team, also having coached youth national teams. The decision-making board responsible for this transition included 30 members, of which half were women.

Spain’s next matchup is scheduled for October during the National Federation’s semi-finals.

Fan Take: This coaching change signals a new era for the Spanish women’s national team as they seek to build on their recent successes. Fans should be excited as this could usher in fresh tactics and renewed energy, helping elevate women’s soccer in Spain even further.
