Indiana Fever Confronts Critical Roster Choices Amid Kate Linklark’s Injury Setback

The Indiana Fever are currently faced with challenging roster decisions due to injuries affecting key players. Veteran guards Sidney Colson and Ahli MacDonald are sidelined with season-ending injuries, while All-Star playmaker Kate Linklark remains out indefinitely because of groin issues. To address this, the team signed former WNBA All-Star Odyssey Sims under a hardship contract.

Although the Fever brought in Sims, there is still a possibility to add another player. Currently, the team has nine healthy players as three guards remain injured. WNBA rules allow teams to sign players on hardship contracts if at least two players are out for a minimum of three weeks. This regulation enabled Indiana to sign Sims without releasing anyone. According to Chloe Peterson from Indystar, the Fever could even sign an additional player, potentially expanding their roster to 11 members, since Sims was signed on a standard hardship contract. This was confirmed by a team spokesman, though it is unclear if they will actually pursue another signing.

If the Fever decide to bring in another player, they might have to release one of the two players who joined after Caitlyn Clark’s return. Clark herself has been sidelined since July 15 due to a fever while with the Connecticut Sun and remains in cautious recovery without having practiced with the Fever yet. Before their game against Phoenix Mercury, Coach White expressed uncertainty about Clark’s All-Star status resuming soon. The delay in Clark’s return adds complexity to the Fever’s roster planning.

Fan Take: This update matters to WNBA fans as it highlights the ongoing challenges teams face with injuries and roster depth, which can impact competitive balance. For the sport, it underscores the importance of flexible league rules like hardship contracts that help teams manage unforeseen setbacks while maintaining the quality of play.
